Who is World's top smartphone maker ? Apple or Samsung ??

The war between the two of the biggest smartphone makers -- Apple and Samsung -- is set to get more intense. According to preliminary data from IDC Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker, Apple has overtaken Samsung in the global smartphone market in the fourth quarter of 2017.

Even though Apple has seen a drop of 1.3% in the Y-o-Y shipments, the company has emerged as the numero uno in the smartphone market share. iPhone volumes reached 77.3 million units whereas, the shipments stood at 78.3 million last year. As per IDC, this is largely because of the company's 2018 line-up -- iPhone 8, 8 Plus, and iPhone X. The report also noted that although demand for the most expensive iPhone ever, the iPhone X, may not have been as high as many expected, the overall iPhone line-up has attracted the attention of a wider range of consumers in both emerging and developed markets.

As for Samsung, the South Korean giant has seen a drop of 4.4% with 74.1 million units in in the fourth quarter of 17, compared to the 77.5 million units from last year. Despite losing its top position, Samsung remained the overall leader in the worldwide smartphone market for 2017.

Overall, 403.5 million smartphones were shipped during the fourth quarter of this year, compared to 430.7 million last year resulting in a 6.3% decline. As for the whole year, 1.472 billion units were shipped, highlighting an year-on-year dip of less than 1%.

The report revealed that the consumers in the developed markets, such as China and the United States, "appeared to be in no rush" to buy the latest generation of flagship devices.

"The latest flock of posh flagships may have had consumers hitting the pause button in the holiday quarter," said Anthony Scarsella, research manager, Mobile Phones at IDC. "With ultra-high-end flagships all the rage in 2017, many of these new bezel-less wonders proved to be more of a luxury than a necessity among upgraders. Even though we have seen new full-screen displays, advanced biometrics, and improved artificial intelligence, the new and higher price points could be outweighing the benefits of having the latest and greatest device in hand."
